ADB: from 2021 – 2014, over 70% of projects in Vietnam focus to address climate change impacts

Description

According to a meeting between Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Lê Công Thành, and ADB Country Director in Viet Nam, Andrew Jeffries, April 8 in Hà Nội, the ADB is preparing to develop a country cooperation strategy period 2021–2025. More specifically, more than 70% of projects will help Vietnam respond to climate change and green growth as ADB´s strategic priority, confirms Andrew Jeffries.

Presently, ADB is collaborating with units under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) to implement circular economic cooperation activities. In particular, The ADB Institute will cooperate with Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPONRE) and Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund , to hold a regional event on the circular economy in the near future. Besides, other ADB projects are supporting Vietnam in solving problems of marine plastic waste and promoting flood risk management and climate change adaptation, including “Promoting action on marine plastic pollution in Asia and the Pacific”, “Integrated flood risk management and climate change adaptation”, and “Modernizing the system of flood forecasting, flood and early warning of Red River-Thai Binh and Ma River”.

Deputy Minister Lê Công Thành expressed that with the assistance of ADB, Vietnam hopes to achieve the goal of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions reduction of up to 27% compared to the normal emission scenario (BAU) until 2030, with international support, within the framework of Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. He also asked ADB to help Vietnam to promote business participation in the carbon market regarding implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Besides welcoming the new cooperation with ADB on circular economy and ocean plastic pollution, Deputy Minister recommended ADB prioritizing to support Vietnam in domestic solid waste management.
