This “pilot project on waste collection in Hậu river” will be implemented by Clear Rivers – a brand name of the Recycled Island Foundation, a non-profit organization in the Netherlands founded in 2014, according to the information from a meeting between Cần Thơ city, the Netherlands Embassy, and Clear Rivers. The Litter Traps is 5.6m long, 2.3m wide, and 2.4m high. It can operate automatically without fuel consumption. River floating waste will be “trapped” into a collection bag and later reused sustainably following the principle of the circular economy. It is estimated to collect up to 8 tons of plastic waste per day. The collection bag will be emptied twice per week by Clear Rivers. This model has been carried out successfully in Belgium, Hungary, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
In addition, since June 2021 the Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch non-profit organization, has piloted a project to collect river floating waste in Cần Thơ river by using automatic garbage collecting interceptor.
