The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has sent a draft proposal on assessing and implementing measures against land subsidence in Hồ Chí Minh City (HCMC) based on experiences applied in Tokyo, Jakarta, and Bangkok. Accordingly, JICA would like to have technical collaboration with HCMC to conduct this (future) project. Under the recommendation of the city’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DONRE), HCMC agreed that the DONRE will coordinate with other local departments and agencies in providing relevant information for JICA to conduct the survey. The results of the survey are necessary to develop this project.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), HCMC has high rates of land subsidence, on average of 4 cm per year, in some areas even 6 – 7 cm. Particularly, An Lạc ward of Bình Tân district suffers the most severe land subsidence. It has sunk 81 cm over the period of 10 years from 2009 to 2019.
