The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) cooperates with the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) to implement the project “Establishment and implementation of geographical information system on climate change vulnerability, risk assessment, and environmental monitoring for Vietnam applying remote sensing technology”. The project will be piloted at three locations: HCMC for land subsidence monitoring, Mekong Delta for saline intrusion, provinces of Quảng Ninh and Hải Phòng for wetland ecosystem monitoring.
The project period is three years with a funding of 3,634 million Euro.
The first optical Earth Observing satellite of Vietnam, VNREDSat-1, operated in 2013. However, the capacity of providing images meets only 20 – 30% of the demand. Additionally, because VNREDSat-1 is an optical satellite, the image quality is affected by climate conditions, it is therefore ineffective in many cases to monitor, especially, natural disaster monitoring. In the meantime, the demand for data of remote sensing satellites is high, particularly in the monitoring of environmental and climate changes and support in the management of natural or artificial objects.
It is expected that the project will benefit Vietnam in terms of European leading experiences and competencies from Italia in the field of remote sensing and radar technologies for monitoring the environment, natural resources, and climate change.
