The project aims to reduce greenhouse gases emissions and increase carbon sequestration in production forests and conserve biodiversity in the high-value forest areas. The project lasts for 6 years from 2021 to the end of 2026. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of the Northwest province of Lào Cai’s is responsible for implementing this project. The project site is located in five local areas including Si Ma Cai, Mường Khương, Bắc Hà, Văn Bàn, and Sa Pa. There are five work packages: (1) improving forest management for communities and with the involvement of communities, (2) promoting sustainable livelihood for forest-dependent communities, (3) strengthening law enforcement for the violations in the forestry sector, (4) improving technical solutions for production forest management, and (5) mobilizing resources for forest management and protection.
The project has total funding of US$ 1.11 million, in which US$ 1 million is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as non-refundable technical assistance and 0.11 US$ million is provided by Lào Cai province as counterpart funding.
