Land subsidence in the Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta is facing challenges of sinking land as a consequence of underground water overexploitation, sea-level rise, and substandard drainage system. The provinces of Sóc Trăng and Bạc Liêu are most severely impacted. Land subsidence can lead to significant economic losses.
In response, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has compiled a draft decree to tighten control of groundwater exploitation. Besides, experts recommend to calculate the base level of the construction work foundation and improve the drainage system.
