NDC implementation: measures to reduce GHG emissions from rice sector in Vietnam

Description

That is the content of a workshop organized last week by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in collaboration with International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN), and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), to collect measures to mitigate the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions from rice production.

According to the MARD, under the framework of a newly approved project on restructuring rice sector in the period 2025 – 2030, among other aspects, climate adaptation and mitigation is one objective. It is also associated with the implementation of the commitment target under the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the agricultural sector.

In response to this, the IRRI, CCAC, CTCN, UNIQUE Landuse – a German consulting firm and the Research Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security proposed their developed toolkit to reduce GHG emissions in rice sector. These tools include: MapAWD – a mapping tool to identify suitable rice area for Alternate Wetting and Drying technology (AWD) application, SECTOR – a GHG emissions calculator specific for rice, and COMPARE – a cost-benefit analysis tool for mitigation options in rice cultivation. The Department of Crops Production under the MARD led the role to formulate the NDC implementation for the sector.
