Adapted technologies for the sustainable protection of water and land resources in the Mekong Delta
Mekong Delta, Cà Mau Province
ViWat Mekong project is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) from 2018 until 2021. It aims at developing strategies, concepts and technologies to essentially contribute to safeguarding the existence of the southern Mekong Delta; with focuses on coastal protection, water management and land subsidence prevention. In order to achieve integrated solutions for these challenges, the whole initiative will be based on three pillars in the fields of Engineering, Planning and Operations, each embedded in its individual scale and topics that work together in different disciplines.
The main task of ViWat is to define and elaborate sustainable and adapted technological and management solutions for safeguarding land and water resources and to develop protective measures. These solutions have to be embedded into land and infrastructure management concepts and into the respective governmental aims and structure in the Mekong Delta region.
The project initiative will therefore work out and implement instructions, technologies and measures in the fields of regional water and land use planning (ViWat Planning), erosion control, land reclamation, and improved water and land subsidence monitoring (ViWat-Engineering), as well as local water and environmental services (ViWat-Operations).
