ViWat Mekong-GO is a definition project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in which the interdisciplinary Vietnamese-German project ViWat (start 2018) is worked out to develop strategies, concepts, and technologies to essentially contribute to safeguarding the existence of the southern Mekong Delta with focuses on coastal protection, water management, and land subsidence prevention. In order to achieve integrated solutions for these challenges, the whole initiative will be based on three pillars in the fields of Engineering, Planning, and Operations, each embedded in its individual scale and topics that work together in different disciplines.
The main task of ViWat is to define and elaborate sustainable and adapted technological and management solutions for safeguarding land and water resources and to develop protective measures. These solutions have to be embedded into socio-economical as well as land and infrastructure management concepts and into the respective governmental aims and structure in the Mekong Delta region.
The project initiative will therefore work out and implement instructions, technologies and countermeasures in the fields of regional water and land use planning (ViWat-Planning), erosion control, land reclamation, and improved (ground)water and land subsidence monitoring (ViWat-Engineering), as well as local water and environmental services (ViWat-Operations)
